Herpes (HSV) and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) are unrelated. One does not cause the other. HPV is the most common STD in the U.S. and more than 5 million people are infected with HPV each year! HPV is much more common than even HSV.
HPV is the virus that causes warts of all types on all parts of the body. The reports (not all that new--from 1998) state that there are over 100 types. Most types of HPV don't cause a problem and aren't any kind of issue. It's generally not tested for unless you asked your doctor. In most cases, HPV is an unobtrusive virus that does not cause symptoms or complications. Only *some* types of HPV can cause cancer. There are over 70 types of HPV. About 23 affect the genital area. About 13 are known to be related to various types of cancers
People can have neither, either or both. Many carry the viruses and don't even now it! Statistics state anyone who's had more than 3 or 4 sex partners probably already has HPV. 75% of everyone who is sexually active probably has HPV in some form according to the latest statistics. You can have HPV or Herpes and might not know it, so get tested and talk with your doctor! *Most standard STD tests do not test for herpes, HPV or HIV unless you specifically ask your doctor to run the special tests for those viruses.*
Some of those types are sexually transmitted and can cause genital warts. Some of the types can cause cancerous cell changes, but most don't. HPV comes in a lot of varieties. A person can have the virus but not have any warts at all. A lot of the time there are no symptoms and it goes unnoticed. Genital warts are known to cause cervical cancer in women if it goes unchecked so get tested women!
